Curtains and Drapery Design Resources

Window Treatments Resources Curtains and Drapery

A room never feels complete without having some sort of finish to the windows unless the window has been specifically designed without treatment. This may be a picture window in a room where privacy and insulation is not an issue or it may be a new technology that makes the glass opaque at the flick of a switch. Generally though and for the great majority of windows the decorative finish may be in the form of curtains or drapery, blinds or shutters and perhaps awnings.

A major consideration when working on the interior of a window and adding a treatment such as drapery or blinds (vertical or horizontal) is the inclusion of a pelmet. The pelmet has two functions. One is to give an aesthetic look and cover the actual hardware that may be holding the window treatment up and the other is that if the top is enclosed is also helps to seal the window preventing drafts and air movement through the gaps at the top of the curtain.

Window treatments enhance a room quickly by also framing the window during daylight hours when the drapery or curtain is open. Tie backs or systems to hold the curtain away form the window are another item I consider essential to finishing the curtain professionally. They allow the curtain to be pulled back so that it doesn’t cover any of the glass maxamizing the full view and allowing full sunlight in. This can also be done by extending the curtain track well past the window edge. However, the design of the room often won’t allow this with the window being close to or even adjacent to a wall that is at 90 degrees to the edge of the window. Therefore there is little room and the tie back or hook caters for this.

Weighting the bottom of the curtain or drape is another trick of the professional designer ensuring the curtain is always pulled straight and allowing it to “drape”correctly. Fine lead weights are sewn into the bottom of the drape and dispersed evenly allowing even weight to the whole of the curtain and ensuring that areas of the drape don’t pull more than others.
